Edmonton Light Rail Transit

Edmonton, Alberta

Custom Concrete Northern was contracted by TransEd, a civil joint venture of Ellis Don, Bantrel and Bechtel to supply, commission and operate a central mixing concrete batch plant for the production of shotcrete. The project is a large Light Rail Transit expansion called the Valley Line LRT that included two 400m long tunnels for southbound and northbound travelling trains. The project location was located right down town Edmonton on Jasper Avenue which presented numerous challenges ranging from an extremely tight footprint, new and historic buildings located as close as 100 yards from the plants silos and logistical challenges with deliveries and material management on site 1.

While Custom Concrete Northern did not directly supply the project, we performed consultations, recommendations and approval of the viable sources for cement and aggregates to ensure material compliance with CSA standards. Subsequently, the materials chosen by TransEd to complete the project were those that we recommended.

Given the small work area for batching operations, in order to minimize space Custom Concrete instructed suppliers to blend batching materials so that less on-site storage would be required. While acting on a prescriptive status Custom Concrete Northern remained available at any time for assistance with mix designing, and troubleshooting issues with shotcrete and shotcreting materials. The plant was designed specifically for underground trans-mixer loading without with requirement for feed or loading conveyors in order to reduce the required footprint.
